Back in the day, and for a long time, couples who needed long distance weddings would use a stand-in replacement in what is called a proxy wedding.

For those who don’t understand what a proxy wedding is, let’s break it down.

Proxy weddings are legally binding marriage ceremonies where a spouse's physical presence would be represented by another person, essentially having a stand-in take their place.

Simple enough? Can’t be at your own wedding? Have a long-distance wedding by having someone take your place for you and act as you.

These were mainly used for those in the military because of the inability to travel back home or take time off to have a wedding ceremony. What a different way to go about getting married!

The way it commonly works is finding an online wedding company to help you make this possible.

The couple will get a marriage license through a county (jurisdiction) that allows online weddings when the couple is not physically together. The most popular and frontrunner of this is Utah County.

Then the couple will join a virtual call with the officiant, witnesses, and all other family and friends involved, and legally get married. It is a 100% real and legitimate marriage.

This is exciting and revolutionary for those who can’t be physically together and want to have a long-distance wedding.
